Values are like our fingerprints. We live by them; they shape our behavior and actions. We create our values based on our surroundings, things we have experienced but also what we want in the future.
The problem is that many of us don’t even know they values. Some people go throughout the life without knowing what, in fact, matters to them.
Let me ask you a question: Have you ever act in a certain way but felt that your action wasn’t right? If your answer is yes, then you were at variance with your beliefs. Knowing your values means better awareness of who you are and what action resonates with your feelings.
Here are three areas of life where your values play a significant role.
1. They create your perspective
Values shape your mindset and what is important to you. Two people from completely different countries, with a different culture and incomparable religion, will think and act in a very diverse way. It doesn’t mean that one or another is right or wrong. It is a matter of values they have adopted throughout the life which defines their perspective.
Your values will always impact your success. Maybe your belief is that money is not everything or vise-verse. Based on your objectivity on family, wealth, health or education, you will create a particular outcome.
If you are not getting in life what you want, you should reevaluate your values and perspective they are giving you. What is more important to you? Be well educated or have lots of money? Maybe you say both, and that’s fine, But there must be one more important than the other which gives you a clue what to focus on more.
2. They form your habits
Your patterns define your life. Based on those little things you do every day, you can see where you are going to be in the next 5 to 10 years. Your habits come from your values. What do you value more, sleep or being awake early? Do you prefer fat muffin full of sugar or healthy meal with vitamins? What is more important to you, party with your friends every weekend or work your butt off to become successful in the future?
These are just a few examples of how different values we may have. You can always rearrange your values and the importance you give it to them, especially when you are not where you want to be. Values are powerful, and they can change all your habits and behavior.
3. They impact your decisions
Results you are getting are an outcome of your decisions. Imagine that your number one value is family. But any time you are supposed to stay at work late, work weekends and so on, you decide to take it. This decision results in less time with your family if any quality time. If a family is the most important to you, you can’t feel satisfied with a result. You need to make decisions based on the importance of a particular value.
The exercise which I am about to show you is very simple, and it is going to take no more than 15 minutes of your time. Make a list of 10 most important values in your life. Number 1 is going to be the most significant and number 10 the least important value. It can be anything you want. Love, family, money, adventure, freedom, happiness, helping others, career, significance, security, courage, independence, wealth, health, recognition, you name it. This exercise will help you to organize and reevaluate your standards, and it will lead to better results which you desire.
You will be able to reach any success, whether personal or professional if you know what you precisely want and what is important to you.
