Have you ever worked your tail off, pushing and pushing but at the end didn’t feel the expected satisfaction? Do you feel depressed or frustrated after the whole day of working hard, even on something you love?
Many would say that if you do what you love and taking constant action, you must be satisfied and happily tired at the end of the day. I thought so too until the moment I found out that it doesn’t feel like it.
Since I know a hand full of people who deal with this struggle of having overly high expectations (including myself) I have for you 4 reasons why being too hard on yourself may actually kill your potential and self-esteem.
1. You adapt yourself to a negative self-talk
The most dangerous thing about self-talk is that it’s silent. You can go all day talking to yourself in a negative way and don’t even notice it. If you are putting too much pressure on yourself but not meeting your overly high expectations, it’s going to be difficult for you to feel the reward from work well done.
Take a deep breath and relax for a minute. If you see that you aren’t completing everything throughout the day, you are probably having too much on your plate or poor time management skill. Take time and figure out what you can adjust or what you can remove from your day and have more time and energy on what actually matters.
2. You’ll lack excitement
Overly high expectations can rob you of your excitement and energy. If you are only pushing but not rewarding yourself for all the sweat and dedication, eventually you’ll stop working hard because you won’t see any progress, even if it’s there.
Don’t get me wrong. We must challenge ourselves and set high goals to aim high, but a feeling of good work and healthy self-confidence towards yourself are equally important.
3. You will create limiting beliefs
Once you start losing your excitement and desire to work hard, you will tend to think in negative terms. When your mind; you with disempowering thoughts, more than likely your dreams will lose on its size, and you’ll create limits.
Let’s make one thing clear. Belief is the most powerful tool for every human being. You can have a lack of money, resources, talent or time but if you got faith in your heart, everything is possible. Stop beating yourself down for not being perfect. No one is.
4. You’ll start doubting your ability
You got some talent and potential, courage and strength but what does it matter if you don’t believe you are powerful beyond measure? If you are too hard on yourself, you can’t even see the potential and power within. Your entire focus goes towards the false statement that you aren’t good enough.
There is a very thin line between getting better every day versus always seeing only how bad and unimproved your skills are. Your vision is important because it shows you where you are heading but look back once in a while. See the big chunk of your life journey you have already passed. You are making progress.
It is crucial to find the balance between pushing yourself to greater things but also rewarding for good work. If you aren’t feeling satisfied and growing, there is some block in your mind which is stopping you from reaching your full potential. I am writing this article because I was there and it took me a long time to realize it. You are doing great, you are doing the best you can and if you don’t, try harder or change tactic but never put yourself down. There are enough people who will be more than happy to do it for you. Become your friend, not an enemy.
